PhD student in computer science specializing in cybersecurity

OPPORTUNITY.DETAILS OPPORTUNITY.DESCRIPTION

We have the power of over 40,000 students and co-workers. Students who provide hope for the future. Co-workers who contribute to Linköping University meeting the challenges of the day. Our fundamental values rest on credibility, trust and security. By having the courage to think freely and innovate, our actions together, large and small, contribute to a better world. We look forward to receiving your application!

We are looking for two PhD students in computer science specializing in cybersecurity.

Your work assignments

Your task as a PhD student will be to conduct world-class research in cybersecurity specializing in protocol security and automated proof reasoning. The PhD student positions are funded by two related research projects:

(1) The WASP-funded SOURCE project investigates secure orchestration principles, using generative AI methods for resource protocol design including automatic verification of the protocol designs. New models and principles will be verified performing experimental research with open data. We will be working with state-of-the-art dynamic resource allocation techniques as well as Trusted Execution Environments (TEEs).

(2) The project “Protocol security verification using dynamic key structures” is funded by the ELLIIT strategic research initiative. The aim of the project is to tackle the inherent computational complexity of protocol security analysis by providing the means and the tools to leverage inherent structures (e.g., dynamic key dependencies) in models of security mechanisms and to use these structures to automate security analysis.

As a doctoral student, you devote most of your time to doctoral studies and the research projects of which you are part. Your work may also include teaching or other departmental duties, up to a maximum of 20% of full-time.

Your qualifications

You have graduated at Master’s level in computer science or mathematics or completed courses with a minimum of 240 credits, at least 60 of which must be in advanced courses in the computer science. Alternatively, you have gained essentially corresponding knowledge in another way.

A candidate for this position is expected to have completed courses in computer science and mathematics with excellent grades. In addition to course transcripts, the candidate should be able to demonstrate software development skills (e.g., through a programming portfolio), as well as mathematical proficiency (e.g., through course work).

Excellent communication in English, both verbally and written, is a requirement.

The work of a PhD student is driven by curiosity, passion for innovation and creativity, and ability to work independently.

Your workplace

The Department of Computer and Information Science was founded in 1983 but its roots go back to the early 1970s. It is one of the largest computer science departments in northern Europe. Our research covers a broad spectrum of fields, from core to applied computer sciences. Its vast scope also benefits our undergraduate and graduate programmes, and we now teach courses in several engineering programmes at bachelor’s and master’s levels, as well as the programmes in statistics, cognitive science and innovative programming. You will belong to the Real-time Systems Laboratory (RTSLAB) in the Software and Systems (SaS) Division within the Department of Computer and Information Science (IDA) at Linköping University. We conduct research in the areas of cybersecurity, dependability, and resource allocation in distributed systems. The lab consists of more than 10 PhD students and provides a vibrant and dynamic research environment.

Wallenberg AI, Autonomous Systems and Software Program (WASP) is Sweden’s largest individual research program ever, a major national initiative for strategically motivated basic research, education, and faculty recruitment. The program addresses research on artificial intelligence and autonomous systems acting in collaboration with humans, adapting to their environment through sensors, information, and knowledge, and forming intelligent systems-of-systems. The vision of WASP is excellent research and competence in artificial intelligence, autonomous systems and software for the benefit of Swedish industry. Read more: https://wasp-sweden.org/

The graduate school within WASP is dedicated to provide the skills needed to analyze, develop, and contribute to the interdisciplinary area of artificial intelligence, autonomous systems and software. Through an ambitious program with research visits, partner universities, and visiting lecturers, the graduate school actively supports forming a strong multi-disciplinary and international professional network between PhD-students, researchers, and industry. ELLIIT is a strategic research environment in information technology and mobile communications, funded by the Swedish government in 2010. With four partners, Linköping University, Lund University, Halmstad University and Blekinge Institute of Technology, ELLIIT constitutes a platform for both fundamental and applied research, and for cross-fertilization between disciplines and between academic researchers and industry experts. ELLIIT stands out by the quality and visibility of its publications, and its ability to attract top talented researchers.
